Edmonton’s CHQT-AM is now known as iNews 880, Edmonton’s 24 Hour News Radio Station. As the new name suggests, programming consists of all news, all the time. It’s power 50,000 WATT signal can be heard throughout much of North America during the evening hours and across most of Alberta during the day.
Since the station’s launch in 1965, it has gone through a number of format changes. For most of its life it broadcast music using an oldies format or easy listening, branding itself as “COOL 880” or “Joe AM”. In 2008, the station finally settled on an all news/talk format and changed its slogan to Canada’s Highest Quality Talk. Although that slogan fit into its station call sign, it didn’t last for long. Eventually, the station changed its identity to All News iNews 880 AM.
Located in the capital city of the province of Alberta, iNews 880 broadcasts a constant mix of news, weather, sports from around the world as well as a good dose of local news coverage and traffic reports. Owned by Corus Entertainment, a multimedia company that owns several TV and radio stations in Canada, the station’s news production is actually done by its sister station CHED 630 AM in Vancouver, B.C., which broadcasts a very similar type of format.
Locally, the broadcaster can be heard on the AM radio band at 880KHz. On the internet, it provides a single, live stream that is available via HTTP only. It is not tuneable with most internet radio players or computer software such as VLC. The station also occasionally posts local news stories and photographs on its website and solicits uploads of local news events (photos) via phone app, which works with Android or IOS. Despite its advertising banner reading, “Online, On Radio. On Demand” the station does not seem to make any of its past or present programming available for downloading in the form of podcasts.
