KQAM AM 1480 in Wichita, Kansas, labels itself as “The Big Talker”. The station’s format consists of local and nationally syndicated talk radio shows and news. Some of their more popular national shows include Dave Ramsey, Jonathon Brandmeier, Laura Ingraham and The Michael Savage Show. It is currently an affiliate of the Fox Radio Network.
The station was first launched in 1980 and was owned by the Walt Disney Company until 2010. The new owner Streckline Communications soon changed the station’s format from a Radio Disney affiliate to an all talk and news format. KQAM’s sister station in Wichita, also owned by Streckline Communications is KGSO AM 1410. KGSO airs mainly sports programming and sports talk shows that are both locally produced as well as having a number of syndicated sports talk shows.. Streckline Commnications owns 8 mid-western stations in all including KQAM, KGSO, KIUL, KGGS, KGYN, KYUL and KGBL, all of which have live, internet streams available. It sometimes refers to its network of stations as The Mid America Network or the Mid America Ag Network
Local shows consist mainly of conservative talk and call-in programs along with a dash of local news and weather. Agriculture seems to be main topic of local news and many of its commercials.
Locally, the AM station broadcasts on 1480 KHz using 5,000 Watts of power during the day and 1,000 Watts at night, which gives it a broadcast range of typically less than 100 miles.
