WGN Radio is one of the largest AM Radio broadcasters in the country. It’s 50,000 WATT AM signal can be heard throughout North America on most evenings and airs a combination of regularly updated news, talk shows and sports. Unlike most talk radio stations, WGN actually produces all of their own programming. There are no syndicated, national talk shows on its schedule. All shows originate from it’s Chicago broadcast location and include popular local talk show hosts such as Steve Cochran, Bill Leff and Wendy Snyder, Roe Conn and Justin Kaufmann.
WGN’s programming consists largely of original talk show programming and news. It also broadcasts play-by-play of most Chicago Blackhawks NHL hockey games as well as NHL playoff games. The station’s live feed can be accessed for free in a variety of streaming formats as well as on XM Satellite Radio. It also broadcasts a secondary, internet-only stream referred to as WGN Plus, which consists largely of talk radio programming. The station is also sometimes referred to as WGN 2.
WGN’s sister TV station, also owned by Tribune Broadcasting, is WGN-TV 9. Also based in Chicago, it is carried on a number of cable systems across the country and was one of the nation’s first satellite-based “superstations”.
WGN had broadcast all Chicago Cubs MLB Baseball games for 90 straight years, many of them with its legendary play-by-play announcer Harry Caray. However, the station ended their relationship with the team in 2014 over a contract dispute. Cubs games are now broadcast by radio on Chicago’s WBBM-AM 780.
In addition to its radio stream, WGN has recently began streaming a live audio/video feed, directly from their studios. The multi-camera broadcast covers the broadcast booth as well as production areas such as news, business and traffic. A link to their live broadcast is available below.
